Go back in time as you learn about why people moved and settled in Crowsnest Pass. Discover old mine ruins, settlements, a cemetery, and mine entrances as we venture towards the ghost town of Lille. Once we finally arrive at Lille, you will understand what makes this place special and you will uncover the hopes and dreams of the early settlers. At Lille, we will relax to enjoy a bagged lunch and create your own art piece representing the hustle and bustle of the ghost town. Lille is a Provincial Historical Site and many parts of Lille still remain, but it is the stories that make it come alive.
Due to COVID-19, this experience has been simplified. Typically we will provide a BBQ lunch at Lille with locally-sourced food and a tour of the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. We are looking for ways to reduce the spread of COVID-19; therefore, will not have shared meals and at this time, the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre is closed. Thank you for understanding.
Since the tour starts at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, we will go over safety and how the day will look. We also have a special activity for you to complete before we start to adventure.
Next, we will drive to the trail head, which is about a 5 minute drive. You will need to bring your own vehicle or arrange for transportation in advance.
Once on the trail, we will make several stops to provide information about the area and engage you with valuable information. The trail does not have a lot of elevation gain/loss. Most of the trail can be accessed with a quad; therefore, we might even see the odd person on a quad. Some of the route we take is off-trail, but still easy. This allows us to venture to some areas more off-the-beaten path, but will add to your experience of understanding this ghost town.
Before we arrive at the ghost town, Lille, we were explore old mine entrances, settlements, a cemetery, part of the old railway, and a waterfall.
While we are at Lille, we will hand you a map, which shows you what used to exist and you can explore these areas. There are a lot of hidden treasures at this site. You will also receive your art piece to create and later take home. During this time, you will also enjoy your bagged lunch from a local cafe. We will spend about an hour at the Lille townsite.
After the town site, we will explore another mine entrance where we will find lots of old mining cars. You will have some time to explore this site to find treasures.
We will then head back to the trail head by taking a back way. There is one hill that is a bit steeper in this section, but we can take our time if needed.
There are no washrooms along the trail.
We will finish our tour by returning to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. Here will will finish the tour and then say our good-byes.
